God or Aliens, which has more Proof?

As a child, if you had older siblings and your mother caught you doing something you shouldn’t have, you learned how to hide the truth of what you did by saying that your older brother or sister caused this. This becomes our belief because it is better for us than admitting to the truth of the situation. In our society we are often distracted by breaking news. We want to believe some of the most incredibly shocking stories like “There are Aliens Among US”. We have a desire to believe stories like this. We search for an explanation of anything new or that which we don’t understand.

For us sometimes it is hard to believe that God exists, that He loves us, that He gave us freedom to believe in whatever we want, and that all He asks is for us to trust Him and follow the life example of Jesus (1 Pet. 2:21, Jn 8:12, Jn 12:26). Beside believing in God, we sometimes can’t accept the truth about God. It seems crazy believing in a being that is three entities in one, believing that God came to us as a human being, and that He created all of the Universe. There are many people that believe that all we see evolved naturally, or that we are actors in an enormous video game. So, what proof do we as Christians have with regard to God or even Aliens?

Let’s start with what is real and what is not real. If we can see, touch, smell or hear something we can say that something exists physically. If we have multiple accounts from reliable witnesses, then we can conclude that something existed or happened. The problem with reality is that we are not comfortable with the unknown, and immediately we want to assign a cause for what happened. This then shapes our reality. As a Christian we should be used to accepting things that we don’t know about God, because we have Faith and Trust in Him.

So, let’s look at our proof for God. Our source for knowing God is, of course, the Bible stories. In the Old Testament God appeared in dreams and in physical manifestations to the Patriarchs, the Priests, the Prophets and ordinary people. We have customs and artifacts left by them, which are strong indications that those people that saw God had their lives changed. In the New Testament we have stories of Jesus who is God in the flesh. Jesus interacted with many people, and we have artifacts such as what is believed to be the cup from His last supper as well as other physical artifacts. With all that evidence, we know that for some people that is not enough. For me the most conclusive proof of God is that of creation itself. Through scientific study we have concluded that the entire universe was formed from a single point almost 12 billion years ago. We also know that everything that exists in creation must have a creator. This applies to a piece of furniture made by a carpenter as well as the universe. If God is real, we know that He is over 14 billion years old and is probably the creator. In fact, He is probably immortal and all powerful just by the fact of creating the universe (Gen. 1:1 – etc., 1 Tim. 6:15-16, Ps 147:5, Lk 1:37,). So, let’s look for proof of aliens.

We can examine what we know about alien extraterrestrials. We do have eyewitness accounts and photographs of UFO’s but there has not been any evidence that the UFO’s are extraterrestrial in origin. Two years ago, Oumuamua was the first interstellar object ever detected entering our solar system. There was initial speculation of many things it could be including that was a probe built by aliens. As of today, the current thinking is that it was made partially of frozen Nitrogen and came from the direction of the star called Vega. At the rate this object was traveling it took over 100 million years to reach us from Vega. This indicates how difficult it would be to even reach the nearest star to us. Also, if an alien had a similar physiology to us, then they would be subjected to forces during the travel that would limit how much acceleration they could endure and thus limit how fast they could travel to a different solar system. For us to reach even Pluto with the Voyager spacecraft took over nine years. To reach the outermost objects in our solar system at that speed would take over 30,000 years. Everything we currently know from science indicates that alien extraterrestrials and we humans are prohibited from reaching one another in a single lifetime.

So where does that leave us Christians? In wonder of our God. We can imagine that in the vast universe there may be another race of people, but God has made it virtually impossible for us to communicate or visit them because of the vastness of the universe. In reading the Bible you might come to the conclusion that Jesus knows about others in the universe when he talks about having other sheep we don’t know about (Jn 10:16). Every day when we read about our God and put Him in our life it only deepens our understanding of His awesome power and love.

The disciple group recommends that you take time to look at the night sky, wonder about God, commit to following Jesus’s example and show your love to others by living in His Truth.
